Questions likely to be asked at formal interview:-


  • Tell me about yourself?

  • What do you know about our company?

  • What skills/qualifications do you have that are relevant to this job?

  • What are you weaknesses?

  • Why should we hire you?

  • Why do you want this job?

  • What are your goals?

  • Why did you leave previous jobs?

  • When were you most satisfied in your job? (Here we want to see what motivates the candidate/what work they like most)

  • What are 3 positive things your last boss would say about you?

  • What accomplishments in your work and social environment?

  • What other positions are you considering? (they should be similar!)

  • What questions have you for us? (see below)


Tips in preparation:

  • Always plan and prepare for interview – know the company details

  • Be positive

  • Remember dress code as 1st appearance very important

  • Arrive 15 mins before interview schedule

  • Maintain eye contact when being interviewed, try to remember name to address person during interview

  • Have a question ready to ask at the end eg “what makes this company a challenging/enjoyable place to work”, or “what organisational changes have occurred in the last few years”, or “what future plans are in the pipeline for the company” or year todate “is the company performing to plan/exceeding etc”


Competency Questions:

  • What goals do you have? How do you plan to achieve them? How do you evaluate success?

  • Describe a situation in which you were successful? What do you think it takes to be successful – give example

  • What accomplishments have given you the most satisfaction? Why?

  • How do you handle conflict? Example. How did you resolve it?

  • What major problem have you had to deal with recently? Result?

  • How do you handle pressure? Example? Outcome.

  • List attributes – then have examples of how they are utilised in a working environment eg. Team player, loyal, good organiser etc etc


PRACTICE – PRACTICE – in front of a mirror and also ask yourself the questions above in advance to ensure clarity etc etc
